I kept getting caught out by the Schengen 90/180 rule, so I built the tool I wished existed, then shipped it to production.
A live web app that turns the EU's 90/180 day rule into something you can see at a glance. I went from a problem I kept hitting to a product with paying users, built solo with AI in a few evenings.
Anyone who spends real time in Europe runs into the Schengen 90/180 rule: you can be in the area for at most 90 days in any rolling 180-day window. It sounds simple until you try to work out, mid-trip, exactly how many days you have left and when they come back.
I thought I had a handle on it until a months-old trip quietly blocked my plans while I was preparing a Luxembourg residency application. The existing calculators gave me a number but never a clear picture, so I was still counting days by hand and second-guessing myself at the border.
Schengen Monitor is a free web app that turns the rule into something you can see:
- A visual timeline of every trip, so the rolling 180-day window is obvious at a glance
- Real-time remaining days that update as you add or change trips
- A clear read on which trip falls out of the window next, and when
- Planning for future trips, so you can sanity-check a plan before you book it
It is live at schengenmonitor.com, free to use, and it has grown past a personal tool: it now has a small base of paying users who rely on it to stay compliant. That is the part I am proudest of. People trusted it enough to pay for peace of mind at passport control.
I shipped the first version in a few evenings, solo. I built it fast with Vercel's v0 to get a working product in front of real use, then kept improving it with Claude Code as I learned what users actually needed. No team and no long runway, just a clear problem and modern AI tooling used well.
